Once you've smoothed all the surfaces of your cake, cut the excess fondant off the bottom. You can lightly brush the cake with vodka to remove the sugar. If you use water, it will make the fondant sticky, and you'll be very dis-heartened! Trust me on that one!

Question: What do I smooth the fondant with?Answer: You can buy a tool specificaly for this task at most craft stores, such as Michales, or you could always try ebay. I've purchased a variety of cake tools that way.
Question: What do I do if my fondant is too soft?Answer: When your fondant is too soft, simply add more powdered sugar. On the other hand, if it's too hard, add a very small amount of water. A little goes a long way.
